About Rushere Hospital

Rushere Community HospitalRushere Community Hospital is located in Kiruhura District, South Western Uganda about 20 miles south of the Equator.

It was started in 1988 as an immunization post in response to the outbreak of measles in 1987.

In the areas of Kazo and Nyabushozi Counties currently Kiruhura District, Sembabule and the surrounding areas.

In 1989 due to the need for basic Health Care Services, the nearest hospital being 100km away, basic medical care, laboratory and maternity services were started in hired premises.

However so due to increased demand for medical services in the area, there was need for expansion.

In 1990 a hospital plan was developed and a donation enabled acquisition of 62 acres of land.

More donations by local civic leaders, government and friends enabled the construction of the first hospital building in 1992 – 1993 and acquisition of equipment.

More buildings have been added since then with the help of government and voluntary donation from friends and well wishers.

The hospital is a strong 102 bed facility with Out Patient Department, HIV Centre, Laboratory, Children Ward, General Ward, Private Ward, an Operating Theatre and Maternity Ward.

The Hospital is a Christian interdenominational private not for profit (PNFP) NGO and treats all people without exception on colour, creed, age and sex.

It is owned by the community who are represented by a Board of Trustees and a Board of Directors.

The Hospital is affiliated to Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) the second largest faith organisation.

The hospital serves as a referral hospital for Kiruhura district with an estimated population of 361,300 people (KDLG Budget Framework 2018/19).

The catchment area also includes Sembabule District and parts of Kyenjojo and Kamwenge.

The Hospital is financially sustained through donations from friends of the hospital and patient user fees.

The Hospital operates on a public private partnership module with the help of implementing partners.

Rushere Community Hospital Services

The hospital offers Maternal and Child Care Services, Diagnostic Services, General Patient Care, Surgical Services, Radiology, Primary Health care Services, Guest House Services and Spiritual Care.

The JCRC has developed an HIV Care Centre of excellence for the region at the hospital offering free services.

Diagnostic services for HIV management and TB are free with financing from USAID and Ministry Of Health.
